The BBRC is the official adjudicator of rare bird records in Britain. Its main function is to apply uniform adjudication standards to claimed records of rare birds in the United Kingdom, excluding Northern Ireland. Records at sea within the UK Economic Exclusion Zone of 200 nautical miles or midpoint between the UK and any neighbouring country are also considered.

With over a million members, including nearly 150,000 youth members this is the largest conservation organisation devoted to birds. The charity manages 200 nature reserves covering 130,000 hectares and are home to 80% of the rarest or most threatened bird species.
The Scottish Ornithologists' Club has 2200 members and 14 branches around Scotland. It plays a central role in Scottish birdwatching, bringing together amateur birdwatchers, keen birders and research ornithologists with the aims of documenting, studying and enjoying Scotland's varied birdlife.
